Wisdom Teeth Removal

Around your late teens to early 20s, wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, start to grow and erupt through your gums.

Sometimes these teeth get stuck in your jawbone or grow in crooked. Without extraction, they may cause pain, infection, or crowding.

Dr. Steven Krendl of Colorado Dental Arts in Littleton, CO, can perform virtually pain free wisdom teeth removal using relaxing sedation.

How Wisdom Teeth Can Disrupt Your Smile

When they erupt incorrectly, wisdom teeth can move existing teeth out of place.

I have been coming to Colorado Dental Arts for five years now and have been very happy. The staff is very friendly and the same technician has cleaned my teeth every time and does a great job. I recently had cosmetic work done and am very happy with it.

The Procedure Timeline

Day of Procedure

Sedation or Anesthesia

After local anesthesia or sedation have been administered by Dr. Krendl, surgery will begin at our fully equipped, modern Littleton practice.

Incision and Removal

Dr. Krendl will make an incision in your gums to access the wisdom tooth. He will remove any bone that is blocking the molar and use a special tool to extract the tooth, breaking it into pieces if needed. Any remaining tissue will be removed.

Stitching

After the incision is stitched up, he will place gauze on the surgical areas. This is to control any bleeding and to help form a blood clot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long is Recovery?

You might experience mild pain and swelling for a few days. Ice packs, soft foods, and pain medication can help. You should be fully recovered within a few weeks.

Do We Need Wisdom Teeth?

The drawbacks of keeping your wisdom teeth often outweigh potential benefits. This area of your mouth has limited space and is extremely difficult to keep clean.

Any Risks to Extraction?

Rarely. A painful dry socket could occur if the blood clot that forms after surgery is dislodged. This is why Dr. Krendl recommends not brushing in the surgical areas for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

Can Implant-Supported Restorations Replace Wisdom Teeth?

No, Dr. Krendl most likely would not place a dental implant where a wisdom tooth was extracted.
